WELCOME TO THE MOVIES

HERE WE GO GANG, MY ALL TIME FAVORITE MOVIES.

1.

RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARC

"Snakes, why did it have to be snakes" ?

From the moment I first saw this movie, I knew I was watching history being made. This flick is what all others would have to live up to from this day forward. A little romance, a little suspence, a little comedy, great special effects ( that still hold up even to this day inspite of all our technology ) and a lot of action. Mixed in with ( the search for the lost ark ) religion? Hello, didn't anybody ever think of this before? But what also sets it apart from all movies before it, was John Williams outstanding, melodic score. For the 1st time ( in my mind ) music had actually became a character in the movie as well.

Great score, great characters, great acting, awesome script & story, tons of quotable lines, 3 sequels, all with Spielburg running the show? Can only add up to the greatest movie ever.

2.

BACK TO THE FUTURE / THE TRILOGY

"Wait a minute Doc, are you tellin me,
you built a tme machine.......out of a Delorean ?"

These movies are more fun than selling whiskey at an AA convention. Ok Ok, I know what you're thinking, I can't have 3 movies in 2nd place. Right??  Too bad, it's my list and I can do whatever I want........But seriously, you know as well as I know, in the end, this is just one long 6 hour movie, and everytime I watch all 6 hours, it's like watchng it again for the 1st time. I mean,it's not just a movie, it's an event.

Besides, movies about time travel can be fun and intriguing at the same time. C'mon, who woudn't want to go back in time and pick up a copy of Greys Sports Almanac, and always bet on the winner.

But this movie was much more than that, inspite of the awesome back drop about time travel and the consequences it could bring, it was always kept grounded in reality between the friendship of Doc Brown & Marty McFly. And what an awesome friendship it was.

Yeah, loved the story, loved the characters. Again, great fun, great writing, great score....................great scott.

3.

TITANIC

It was the most erotic moment of my life.

Admit it, you love disaster flicks don't you? Of course, Titianic was much more than a disaster flick.

What really set this movie apart from your typical disaster movie, in my opinion, was the romance between the 2 main characters, and the sinking of the Titanic pretty much from their perspective. James Cameron made us fall in love with these characters, before we watched them die. Let's face it, a movie is much more powerful when you actually care about the characters before they die. Still, it had awesome special effects, and once again, a beautiful score by John Williams. Plus it has one of my favorite character actors, Bill Paxton in it. I actually met him hiking in the Smokies years ago. But that's another story.

Once again, it comes down to an awesome story, great direction, outstanding performances from all the actors, and characters we'll remember forever.

Sorry James Cameron, but Titanic still blows Avatar out of the water.

4.

ALIENS

"Hey Vazquez, you ever been mistaken for a man ?"
No, have you" ?

"What exactly are we dealing with here ?" Wow, I could go on a long time about this movie. In fact, I'll still be talking about it long after they've finally terraformed LV426.

This is simply one of those movies, that the very minute you're done watching it, you have to watch it again immediately. In fact, if I rememeber correctly, I watched it 3 times in a row, and the next day again, before I had to return the video. ( remember at that time, it was like 80 bucks to buy a video, so you always rented a copy ) Anyway, until this movie came out,  it was never so much fun, to be scared shitless. Plus again, it had my favorite guy in it, Bill Paxton.

Enough can not be said about the actors, and the characters they played. Maybe it's my imagination, but it sure seems like every person in this movie was perfectly cast.

I believe that's 2 out of 4 for you allready Mr.Cameron. Still no Avatar. I say we nuke the site from orbit.

5.

STAR TREK IV / THE VOYAGE HOME

"Well if it isn't Robin Hood and Friar Tuck".

For those of you who don't know yet, I am quite a trekky, or trekker, or whatever you want to call me.

This movie was certainly the pinnacle of the Star Trek ( TOS ) series. It had all the elements that trekkies came to love. Lot's of action, lot's of character interactment, touches of humor in an otherwise impossible situation. This truely did represent everything that Star Trek was about. Not to mention another seriously awesome, well thought out, save the Earth, time travel story. ( and you know by now how much I love those ). This one was no exception.

George and Gracie would no doubt agree with this pick. Now get a life.

6.

CONTACT

"1st rule of government spending.....
Why buy 1, when you can have 2 at twice the price".

Not sure where to start with this one.

A perfectly written story, of a very sensative subject. On the surface, this was an outstanding science fiction story, about finding life on other planets, and a killer idea, at how that might just happen. But at the heart of this movie, is the conflict between Religion and science, if indeed other life was found on other planets. And no one knew that conflict better than Carl Sagan. The way he blended ( through his characters, and the script ) not only the excitement of finding other life, but, to a certain degree, what effect it would have on religon as well.

So there you have it, the perfect story for another great movie, and Carl, you did it man.............. You wrote a great science fiction story, and grounded it in humanity.

Not to mention, I'm secretly in love with Jodie Foster, ( just don't tell Nicole Kidman ).  As for any debate between theologists, and scientists, all I can say is,...... small steps Elly, small steps.

7.

DIE HARD 2 / DIE HARDER

"How can the same shit, happen to the same guy twice?"

Not only does this movie come in at number 7 on my all time fav list, but it clocks in as my 2nd favorite Christmas movie. Right behind White Christmas. ( but that'll be another list )

Not sure why I like this one more than the 1st, probably cause it had a few more colorful characters. After all, the bad guys were ruthless. Again, it just seemed like every actor was perfectly cast. Definately cause there were more scenes in the snow ( and down here we don't get much snow, and I miss it being originally from Ohio). Or maybe it was because the same shit was happening to the same guy twice. ( I mean, what are the odds ).

In the end, it was a great flick about the good guy kickin ass and taking care of business. And man, can John McClane kick ass and take care of business?

Yippe-kay-ay mother fu&*er

8.

JURASSIC PARK

Think they'll have that on the tour"?

I think I'm starting to give away my age here with these movies. ( wait till you see #10 )

Clearly though, Jurrasic Park no doubt makes it on a lot of top 10 lists. I even bought into the theory, that it was actually possible to clone a Dinasour from a mosquito DNA. ( I've since heard it was all hogwash, but isn't that what they've said about a lot of inventions born from somebody's imagination? )
Anyway, Mr. Spielburg was way ahead of his time on this one as well ( see Raiders of the Lost Ark )

In true Spielburg fashion, special effects are only a very small part, if any, in what makes a great movie. Obviously in this one it didn't hurt. But again, a yummy cast of characters, blended with an outstanding script, sprinkled with clever writing, and of course, another tasty score from John Williams, certainly made me hungry enough to make this movie number ate...................ouch.

9.

FAR AND AWAY

"Take friday as well, you spineless half of a man".

Ron Howard is the master at directing true stories. If I had a list of favorite directors, he would be on top of a short list. Plus, when it comes to directing true stories. Nobody does it better..... Nobody.......He can take a movie where everybody knows how it's going to end, and yet still weave excitement, fun, suspence, and the feeling that it just might somehow end differently than history paints it.

Now there's always a little Hollywood imagination put into even the truest of true stories, and I'm sure Far And Away was no exception. But at the end of the day, a great movie, ( and that's what this was ), still boils down to a pot of great writers, a great script, awesome performances, and of course, that frequently unheard of character, the soundtrack. Pun intended. I believe that's 4 soundtracks this week in the top 10 for you Mr. Williams.
Plus, I'm secretly in love with Nicole Kidman...............just don't tell Jodie Foster.

10.

THE SOUND OF MUSIC

"Tell me Frauline, were you this much trouble at the Abbey"?

You know, I must have been around 6 or so, when one day, my mother wanted to drag me off to this movie theater. I sort of remember not being very happy about it, would have much rather stayed home and played ball with my friends or something, but that was not going to happen this day.

Naturally, not too long into the movie I was glued to the screen. Here they were putting music into a movie. I thought to myself, what a great idea putting songs in a movie. Of course, I had no idea they'de been doing this for years, but as a young kid, it sure struck a chord.

What a great movie this was. Christopher Plummer was awesome. Julie Andrews? What a voice. ( Does she ever miss a note? ) Robert Wise did an awesome job of directing. I loved the scenery, the characters, the story, ( only years later did I learn it was actually a true story ) and most certainly the music.

And that's just a "few of my favorite things" about this movie.

OK GANG,THAT WRAPS UP THE TOP 10, HOPE YOU ENJOYED IT.
I WOULD LOVE TO HEAR FROM YOU & YOUR TOP FLICKS, AND ANY COMMENTS YOU HAVE ON MINE.
ENJOY THE REST OF THEM, ALOT OF THESE COULD HAVE EASILY BEEN ON THE TOP 10 AS WELL.
